Developers at Nintendo have dreamed of
creating a simultaneous multiplayer Super Mario Bros.
game for decades. The Wii console finally makes that dream
come true for everyone with New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Supporting 2-4 players in side-scrolling co-op and
competitive platforming action, and featuring a mix of fan
favorites and new characters, new powerups and various input
options via the Wii Remote, it is destined to become an
instant classic in one of the most beloved game franchises of
all-time.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like all the previous releases in the Super Mario Bros. franchise is a side-scrolling platforming game where players collect coins as they attempt to make their way through progressively more difficult game levels using their ability to time jumps over obstacles and avoid a slew of enemies. But although the game contain several well-deserved nods to previous games in the series in the form of iconic characters like Mario, Luigi and two Toads, as well as familiar enemies, sound effects and levels, it is not simply another trip down Mario Bros. memory lane. Taking advantage of the flexibility and power of the Wii and Wii Remote, New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to preserve the retro experience that fans love about the series, while adding new game features. Notable additions among these include, expansive play levels and new powerups and characters, but by far the most important, and in fact game-defining new feature is simultaneous multiplayer. A Franchise First: Simultaneous Multiplayer Since the very first Super Mario Bros. game took the world by storm in the late 1980s gamers anxious to get into the action have patiently and impatiently waited their turn as the infamous 'player 2.' Those days are no more. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii players can now navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time, on the same level, at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun. Controller Choices Via the Wii Remote In another nod to the series' Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) roots, the Wii Remote controller used with New Super Mario Bros. Wii is held sideways, allowing for easy, classic inputs using the D-pad to direct playable characters, the 1 button to jump and 2 button to spit out projectiles like snowballs and fireballs. In addition, players can access powerups with their choice of either the push of a button, or by shaking the Wii remote, again demonstrating the perfect merging of classic gameplay and modern game design which is New Super Mario Bros. New Classic GameReviewed by Queen LTD, 2010-03-05
It was exciting to see an "old" game be made "new"! I couldn't wait to play it! It was difficult at first turning the controller sideways, but after the first play, I was hooked! Has subtle differences from the old game (ie-when it's on 2 players, the second player starts where you are not at the beginning like the old one). However, my son's, my husband, and myself (who are big fans of the old Mario Brothers) still enjoyed it none the less.
Great game.Reviewed by M. Sullivan, 2010-03-04
Let me start by saying that I have read most of the reviews that
have been posted on this game. I read all the 1 and 2 stars as well
and do not agree with most anything witten in most of them. I have
read about the sloppy controls, the lack of a save feature, the
lack of charactor choices, the crappy graphics, and insane
difficulty levels. I have not been a fan of Mario games produced
after Super Mario 64 because I did not like the game play, controls
and view. I also have not been a big fan of the Wii system as I
thought the controls were a pain with regular games. (Excluding
interactive ones like baseball and bowling, ect..)
This game has changed all of that. I bought a Wii JUST FOR THIS
GAME, as it is the first real Mario game since Super Mario World
was introduced with the SNES. I grew up with Mario Bros. games, and
they are, to me, the greatest games. I actually got a BRAND NEW NES
"Regular Nintendo" for my birthday in 1985. This game combines the
best elements of Mario Bros 1, 3, and World for SNES, adds hints of
Mario 64 and produces a great level of play.
First I will adress the controls: They are almost identical to
classic Mario. The left, right, run and jump are all exactly the
same. They do add a few new features like tilting and shaking the
remote, but this just adds to the game. By no means are these
controls "Difficult," "Sloppy," or "Unpredictable." If you find
them so, either change the batteries in your remote, or there is
something wrong with your remote or you.
Second: No it does not have the best save feature, but the claims
mentioned are highly exaggerated. You can save just fine with it,
but not as easily as you could with SNES's World.
Third: Lack of charactor choices?? There are four players and four
choices. Mario Bros. typically had 2 and 2. Granted, instead of 2
Toads, they could have picked another charactor from Mario, but
really, is it that big of a deal? I will say that the rumors about
the programming cut backs bieng the reason for not using daisy are
retarded. If that is indeed the reason, then yeah, Nintendo made a
bad choice.
Fouth: Too hard?? Insanely difficult?? I played this game for over
four hours the first night I owned it and got past level 5. I also
had over 60+ lives by the end of the first world. How much easier
do you need it? I am by no means a "Gamer." I really dont play them
much since the SNES days. There were a few parts that were
difficult, but not insanely so.
Over all I think that this game is an excellent production. I do
find some faults in it, hence the 4/5 stars. This game is
drastically too short and under complicated for those that want to
do more than simply beat it. SM World was great because there were
so many hidden features and things that you could unlock. Or you
could simply play through and beat it. I must have beaten it 1000
times, but I dont think that I ever completed it. This one, what
you see is what you get for the most part. In that aspect it is too
much like the original. Given the capabilities of the Wii system, I
expected a bit more. I still thoughly enjoy this game and am glad
that Nintendo has remembered why they were number 1 from 1985 until
2000. (They didnt produce and competitive consols after the N64.) I
now enjoy Nintendo products again and will be using the download
feature on the Wii to purchase the classic games I grew up with.

Multiplayer gemReviewed by Yevgen Ostroukhov, 2010-03-03
This game may seem unoriginal, tired et all - until you try
multiplayer. It is absolutely the best coop experience on the
market - I (30 yo) play it with my son (4 yo) and we both have
loads of fun. The core gameplay is tried-and-true Mario platformer
(even 4 yo can learn it). Smart design allows helping each other -
i.e. if my son is falling into lava he can "bubble up" and fly back
to me without loosing a life.
I am not sure if the game is a good singleplayer experience (unless
you never played Mario Bros. before) but it is absolute must have
if you have somebody to play with.
